Fiona McIlwain is a local Brisbane (South Side) artist and educator.
Fiona is extremely passionate about nurturing all children and encouraging their creative talent.
What makes Fiona's classes unique is her attention to history, contrasting techniques and use of art.
Fiona studied art and design and worked previously as a graphic designer. Over the past 25 years, Fiona has been busy tutoring creative children from all over Brisbane whilst furthering her studies. She has had many of her students continue on in the art field obtaining various awards and University degrees. Fiona is a wife and mother to her gorgeous family Eric, Heléna and Sophia.
Classes run for an hour after school during each term for approximately 7 weeks on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The children are given at least two projects which they work on learning not only new artistic techniques but also theory based skill. Fiona takes the children on an creative journey helping them discover there inner artist. The studio is a creative space for mature minds looking to learn more about watercolour, acrylics, drawing and sculpture amongst their peers.
In October 2019 the McIlwain family tragically lost their eldest daughter Heléna at age 19 from a pulmonary embolism. Helena was very close to the some of the children in our art family as she assisted Fiona with art classes for many years. Helèna was gifted in so many ways especially in the medical world and was a power force in disabilities. She had a love of accepting all children and embraced everyone no matter what their ability was. The family continues to grieve such a tremendous loss however, Fiona says having the children still coming to her special art classes warms her heart!
Heléna's spirit is living on through her legacy "Helena's House". A house for young adults with a disability to learn life skills so they can take the next step towards independent living. Fiona is now Co Founder of the Heléna's House project with the Bestlife family to help raise awareness and funds for the house to be built.
